Video Summary:

Here are the 5 things that every leader should focus on when leading their team through a crisis:

1. details

What does it look like to increase accountability and focus with your teammates? So often, we miss the details when there’s a big crisis like COVID-19 going on. We become consumed in the media and this inability to focus due to crisis mode can easily get in the way of the health and productivity of our jobs. Be sure to focus on the details and work towards increasing accountability and focus.

2. discipline

What does it look like to ensure that each person knows what they are supposed to be doing during this time? Right now, it’s easy to get side-tracked with everything else going on. To combat this, consider starting each day with a 15-minute meeting. It’s a lot harder to be distracted if you know that there are specific things that need to get done by the end of that day. Be sure to review those things with your team.

3. decision-making

During uncertain and crisis-mode times, paralysis can sink in and become a reality for you as the leader but for your team as well. Many times, a strong leader is a decisive leader. At the end of the day, decisive leaders know how to make decisions with the information they have and are able to bring clarity to the situation. Be sure to provide your team with clear decisions on the next steps to come. This will help reduce the feeling of uncertainty.

4. discernment

Now more than ever, it’s important for leaders to think through everything that’s going on, how to best get through these times but also how to emerge from this COVID-19 reality. Only you can think through the best plan for your family and your team. At this time, discernment plays a huge part in this. To create discernment, set aside a time and space where you can really reflect, process, and think things through. This will help clear your mind so that you can have the best perspective possible and enable you to make great decisions.

5. determination:

During a crisis, one of the best things you can do is roll up your sleeves and keep moving forward. One way that helps do this is by choosing a future date and saying to yourself “I’m going to keep pushing through until this date,” then offer yourself a reward when that date comes. But don’t just keep the reward for yourself. Celebrate with your team and family through a company barbecue or a Friday off of work for everyone. If needed, repeat this process until the uncertain times pass by. Just make sure to look forward to celebrating with your team and your family and be determined to continue moving ahead.

When there’s so much uncertainty going on in the world, it’s important to be a strong leader and to create guidance and assurance for those you lead. Use these 5 tips and start leading your team well through these uncertain times.
