5 Ways to Grow Your Relationships with Your Family

By Brandon Schaefer February 24, 2020

For many of us, growing relationships between the people around us can be extremely difficult. Work gets busy, the kid's school schedule picks up, and soon you realize that your relationships at home are suffering.

To avoid this, here are 5 things you can do to maximize your relationships with your family and those around you:

1. Go on a “date” with each of your kids.

We all say “time goes by too fast” don’t we? Slow it down a bit with some 1-on-1 time with each of your kids. Make it as fun as possible, shut your phone off and do whatever they want to do (within reason, of course).

2. Talk through your schedule as a family

Does everyone know about Dad’s work trip coming up? Or Band Camp that's starting soon? Sit down and talk things through… Where are the busy days? The busy months? How can we help each other out? Create a family calendar if you don’t have one.

3. Connect with your best friends

When have you last connected with your own close friends? Get together with those friends you enjoy and put some dates on the calendar so time doesn't slip away from you again.

4. Schedule rest first

Before “crazy” starts, designate some times of intentional rest. No doubt there will be plenty happening between now and the summer. Many people tend to over fill the calendar… and before you know it there’s no time for rest, family time, or date nights. Schedule these first.

5. Do something "fun” you won't regret

Is there a movie your family has been wanting to see? What about a short day-trip you've been thinking about? Take this week to think through something your whole family has been wanting to do together, then schedule it and do it. You won't regret it.

Doing these 5 things will help you build a better relationship with your family, which will then reflect on your relationships at work.
